Biography

Jean-Paul Marsman (Nijmegen, 1962) is a Dutch artist who lives and works in Veldhoven, the Netherlands. He has been a full-time professional artist since 1998. His work has been exhibited and collected internationally and can be found in private collections, galleries, museums and corporate collections.

From design to art

After studying advertising and art direction, Marsman began his career in the advertising industry. He worked for several agencies, developing his skills in concept development, visual communication and design. He eventually founded his own advertising agency. His background in advertising and design has continued to influence the way he approaches images and visual ideas.

Even during his years in advertising, Marsman remained deeply involved in painting. In 1998, he decided to leave the advertising world behind and devote himself entirely to his own art. Since then, his painting has developed in several different directions.

A significant part of his earlier work consists of colourful figurative paintings influenced by graffiti, Expressionism and Pop Art. Image and text often play an important role, working together to create energetic and direct compositions. The work is inspired in part by everyday situations and events, while his background in graphic design remains clearly visible.

A growing interest in realism

Over the years, Marsman also developed a growing interest in realistic painting and in the craftsmanship of the Old Masters. The calmness, light, refinement and use of colour in the work of Johannes Vermeer have been a lasting source of inspiration. In 2018, Marsman decided to focus entirely on this realistic direction. In his current work, Marsman combines a precise approach to painting with a free and sometimes unexpected choice of subjects. Birds, flowers, fruit, stones and other familiar elements are rendered with great attention to detail, light, colour and material, but are often placed in unexpected combinations or situations. The result is an image that feels convincingly real while also having something unusual or slightly surreal about it. This combination is central to Marsman’s work. The subjects are familiar, but the way they are brought together creates a sense of curiosity and leaves room for the imagination. An everyday object or a natural element can take on an entirely different meaning and presence when placed in a new context.

craftmanship and imagination

Craftsmanship plays an important role in his realistic paintings. From the first sketch to the finished work, a painting can take months to complete. Marsman pays close attention to the qualities of different materials, from the plumage of birds and delicate flower petals to glass, stone and reflective surfaces. Light and colour are not simply used to reproduce what he sees; they also help determine the atmosphere and presence of the image.

Although his colourful figurative work and his current realistic paintings may appear very different at first glance, both stem from the same interest in imagery, contrast, composition and imagination. In both directions, Marsman looks for images that hold the viewer’s attention and reveal something beyond what is immediately apparent.

Marsman’s work is internationally represented by Gallery Bonnard in Nuenen, the Netherlands, and Lahaina Galleries in Maui, Hawaii. His paintings are held in private collections around the world and have been exhibited internationally, including in New York, London, Paris, Johannesburg, Belgrade and St. Petersburg.
